Update map[edit]

This map needs updating

Hi, could you please update File:Map of Pirate Parties.svg? Helper201 (talk) 06:29, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

cannot, too technical for me Estopedist1 (talk) 10:29, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Administraator?[edit]

Tere, Estopedist! Kas sa soovid saada Commonsi administraatoriks? Ma võin luua vastava taotluse. Muide, palun arhiveeri oma kasutajalehekülge nii eesti vikis kui Commonsis. Taivo (talk) 10:56, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You may also want to assess your English skills and update your babel boxes.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:27, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Taivo! It is a great distinction. I have to think about it. It means great responsibility for the world largest free files database. When fighting against massive vandalism in Wikidata, I have encountered several attacks to my Wikimedia account, and my user account is still not double-authenticated--Estopedist1 (talk) 09:14, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Palace of Auburn Hills[edit]

Hello, can you shine light on this edit? I think I am a bit confused as to why a CFD needs to take place when the official title of the venue is incorrect, as evidenced by enwiki.--Astros4477 (talk) 15:16, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Astros4477: I am not a native English speaker. I guess that "the" can be add in any event venue in USA. Is there any other venue in Commons, which start with "the"? Couldn't find at Category:Sports venues in the United States by state Estopedist1 (talk) 15:45, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"The" is certainly a prefix that is informally used for many sports venues; however, there are some venues that have "The" formally as a prefix. On Commons, the most notable example is Category:The Forum (Inglewood, California). Overall, it is not particullarly common, but the inclusion on enwiki and the logo of the venue itself, seems sufficient enough to show it is a part of the formal name of the venue.--Astros4477 (talk) 15:58, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Astros4477 @Themightyquill and Auntof6: is the using of "the" certainly necessary here? Estopedist1 (talk) 17:04, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The extra space after "1906" may not fit the specific criteria of aims #3 and 6, but is it not an obvious human error that should be corrected? CentreLeftRight 18:51, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@CentreLeftRight we rarely correct file names with redundant or missing spaces. It is possible that in future a bot will fix such technical mistakes Estopedist1 (talk) 20:49, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

E. Liiv[edit]

Muidu tekitab see ainult arusaamatusi. Kruusamägi (talk) 21:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kruusamägi sorry, I don't remember this User talk:Liivasiil's case from 25 August 2021. Maybe user:Taivo wants to say something? Estopedist1 (talk) 05:46, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong nationality[edit]

Thank you for adding this. His nationality is wrong. He was only a citizen of the United States from 1957 until his death. Have tried to fix it, but apparently I don't know how. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:38, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed now. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:42, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@SergeWoodzing I moved the description into Wikidata. Now the description is redundant in Commons. Please keep Commons clean and centralized info will be collected into Wikidata entry Estopedist1 (talk) 14:37, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK as long as you stop removing details from the category descriptions which are not covered by Wikidata. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:40, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Church category names[edit]

Please note that in i.e. Denmark, Sweden, Norway & Germany we almost exclusively use the native names for church categories (see for example Category:Listed churches in Ystad Municipality). In my experience this has the advantage of reducing risk of confusion between same name churches in different countries, makes it easier to determine which country a church is located in and makes it much more likely that a native contributor will select the correct category.--Hjart (talk) 11:16, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hjart I think it is not sustainable solution (currently solved by redirects), and hardens to harmonize global churches naming. For a visionary human (considering globalization and global language harmonization), this native/regional pecularity is just a temporary stage. However, I can live with it, if others want it. Estopedist1 (talk) 11:31, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A visionary would try to exploit wikidata for globalization rather than try to "harmonize" commons category names too much. I think a lot of people would appreciate it if your church categories end in "kirik" rather than "chuch". Hjart (talk) 11:41, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the future, you may just want to change Template:Religion in Sweden by year. I see that the churches categories were included so there's maybe 100 more categories needed. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:55, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Geogroup templates?[edit]

Can I ask you to add {{Geogroup|level=1}} to all streets in Denmark, that doesn't allready have it? Preferably right above any {{Wikidata Infobox}} template. I'm on a Linux box and it appears AWB doesn't work quite as well here. Hjart (talk) 08:14, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Hjart of course I can, but do you have a good idea, how to get full list of streets in Denmark? Estopedist1 (talk) 08:25, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That would be https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=22332869 . Just filter out all titles with " in " or " of " in them (easy with awk). Hjart (talk) 08:35, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hjart like this? https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Adelgade_(Hobro)&action=edit Estopedist1 (talk) 08:50, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly! If you can avoid the empty line between the 2 templates, that would be preferred though. Hjart (talk) 08:54, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hjart: Done. But some problems:
  1. Category:Streets on Slotsholmen #preposition “ON”, adequacy?
  2. Category:Gader i Den gamle By #category name should be in English?
  3. Category:Ryk Ind # Wikidata Infobox is missing
  4. Category:Søborg Hovedgade # Wikidata Infobox is missing --Estopedist1 (talk) 09:47, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you. Slotsholmen is an island in Copenhagen, so I figured "on" would be appropriate. Fixed the others.
    Can you do [Copenhagen] too? That's a list of almost 900 though. Hjart (talk) 10:10, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Hjart I will put this Copenhagen in my to-do-list (very likely for this month). If this should be geogrouped ASAP, then let me know. Nice holidays! Estopedist1 (talk) 11:06, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm in no hurry. Would just be very nice to have. Happens once in a while that I'm trying to find things in there. Hjart (talk) 11:11, 22 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't it possible to let a bot do this? I created many of Copenhagen categories so the adding of geogroup to them takes a lot of space on my watchlist right now. Alternatively split it up in portions. --Dannebrog Spy (talk) 08:30, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Dannebrog Spy it is a one-time job, so I don't create a bot account for it. AutoWikiBrowser is quite bot-like. Sorry, if it cluttered your watchlist. 92 categories is still in my AutoWikiBrowser list. Do you mind, If I finish this job for 92 categories yet, so there is not loose ends? Estopedist1 (talk) 08:36, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please wait just a day or two? Just so I have a chance to se if there are other things on my watchlist. --Dannebrog Spy (talk) 08:46, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dannebrog Spy: no problem. But please tell me when you are ready Estopedist1 (talk) 08:47, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will do that. --Dannebrog Spy (talk) 08:53, 23 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, you may continue. I had to chance my watchlist from the normal 250 posts to 500 so that I could still see everything from the past week. But with 400+ posts at the moment it takes some time to load. And it also took some time to look it through. So please remember another time that so many edits in a short time may have consequences for other users. --Dannebrog Spy (talk) 14:58, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hjart: finally ✓ Done. Thanks for the comment Dannebrog Spy! Estopedist1 (talk) 18:46, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tesla Supercharger category changes[edit]

Hello Estopedist1. A question about your changes for the Tesla Supercharger charging stations categories: Why would you change the template in a category from world wide to europe-only even the category itself already holds categories outside of europe? --D-Kuru (talk) 06:39, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@D-Kuru really thanks, mate! ✓ Done: all corrected. Sidenotice: the visual layout of the template (i.e. {{Navigation by country}} should be better Estopedist1 (talk) 06:46, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Estopedist1. I noticed some of the CFDs you started. When you give the reasoning for something, the word to use is rationale, not rational. :) -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:47, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sports in the Isle of Wight[edit]

"Isle of Wight" is an English county. The main category is Sports in England by county, thus the category is "Sports in the Isle of Wight".. We don't care what en.wiki does, we are Commons. The correction was suggested to me by some English speaking Commoners from England. -- Blackcat 20:28, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Blackcat I am not native English speaker, so I am helpless. But certainly we care what enwiki do, however we don't need to follow enwiki in every time. For the sake of harmony, "in" fits best, but I reckon that CFD would be best solution. In addition, category's history is lost, I cannot see who requested the move Estopedist1 (talk) 05:55, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
CfD might be an appropriate solution, anyway I wish to point you out that I got advice, on the topic, by a native speaker back in 2015 (i had to look back in my talk archive). -- Blackcat 18:33, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. What was the intent behind this category and its subcats? Not many people know about these cats and no one seems to be working through them. If they had been left as uncategorized they would be more visible instead of hidden away here Gbawden (talk) 10:19, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Gbawden: many files from Flickr are hard to categorize, and often is rather out of Commons scope or borderline. When I worked through e.g. countries top categories (e.g. Category:Latvia), then often these top categories was "cluttered" by Flickr files. And this category in question nests well into Category:Media needing categories by source Estopedist1 (talk) 12:06, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The issue I have is that they have been removed from Media needing categories - I stumbled on this cat by accident - if you don't know about it the risk is that no one will make an effort to categorize the images. They should be marked as uncategorized as well to make them more "visible" Gbawden (talk) 05:48, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gbawden but they are in Category:Media needing categories. I think it is good if these Flickr, Wellcome, Panoramio etc. images don't clutter our e.g. category:All media needing categories as of 2018‎ or e.g. more granular category:Media needing categories as of 14 June 2016 Estopedist1 (talk) 06:41, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Navika Sagar Parikrama route.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Kelpie collie.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Ismail Ahmed Cachalia.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Ismail Ahmed Cachalia.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

December 2023[edit]

Hello! Do you really feel your personal opinions should interest Commons regarding which Estonians are "probably not notable"? They do not. Please keep opinions of that kind to yourself and do not put boxes on pages with them. A Commons category contains images relevant to the project, regardless of whether or not the subject is notable. We've already handled this on the category's talk page. SergeWoodzing (talk) 10:17, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@SergeWoodzing: answered with reverting message Estopedist1 (talk) 10:20, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please use the category talk page, or this one. Do not write to me. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 10:25, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see where you've added templates to several more category pages with your similar personal opinions. That does serious damage to this project, and I must warn you to stop it. If a Wikidata infobox is added to a category page you can revert that and claim that the subject is not notable enough, leaving out the word "probably" (please!). That can then be discussed on the talk page there as an appropriate or inappropriate action. It is not up to you or me or anyone to decide alone where a Wikidata infobox should or should not be added. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 10:34, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't stop doing this, you will ve reported for disruptive editing. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:27, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@SergeWoodzing: it is not disruptive, but helpful to avoid creating of Wikidata entries which will be deleted, because no serious sources Estopedist1 (talk) 12:31, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you are not going to read what anyone writes to you, what's the use of discussing? If a Wikidata infobox is added to a category page you can revert that and claim that the subject is not notable enough, leaving out the word "probably" (please!). That can then be discussed on the talk page there as an appropriate or inappropriate action. It is not up to you or me or anyone to decide alone where a Wikidata infobox should or should not be added. Nobody is interested in what you think "probably". It is not relevant and adding this over and over with such wording is clearly disruptive,. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:38, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot drop the word "probably" because I am not 100% sure. And maybe new serious sources have been emerged, and the person in question can have a Wikidata entry Estopedist1 (talk) 12:42, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The word is your personal opinion. Read what I wrote! That's how you can do this correctly. You personal opinion is not relevant in such matters as posting templates to image pages. Nobody's personal opinion is relevant. Only facts. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:51, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you find a guideline to support the opinion that only notable subjects should have Wikidata boxes? Is that also your personal opinion? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:53, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@SergeWoodzing: I am an Wikidata administrator (sorry for mentioning it). Barely having a category in Commons (e.g. Category:Aleksander Karama), doesnt't make it notable for Wikidata. E.g. article in enwiki or dewiki do make it automatically notable for Wikidata Estopedist1 (talk) 13:07, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know you are. And that makes your use of the word "probably" even more astounding. I have given you clear, constructive and good advice on how to solve these problems on Commons, and I strongly suggest you follow it. This subject, aside from your behavior, can now continue to be discussed here, preferably by other users familiar with what's feasible on this project. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 13:14, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

December 2023 (2)[edit]

You reverted without using the talk page. We don't do that. Don't do it again! SergeWoodzing (talk) 10:24, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Low Loader Multi-Wheel 2.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".

Thank you!
