Wikipedia has more information about Apple IIGS.

The Apple IIGS was the penultimate – and greatest – of the Apple II line. With a hefty 2.8 MHz processor and a RAM configuration ranging from 256 KiB to a whopping 1 MiB, it could run virtually all Apple II programs, as well as those designed for use with its enhanced graphics and sound (hence the GS in IIGS). It was the first machine to use the Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) interface, that was later used on all Macintosh computers beginning with the Macintosh II and SE, before finally ending, 12 years later, with the iMac in 1998.
