MLA Statement on SCOTUS Affirmative Action Ruling
In July 2023, the Executive Council approved the following statement.
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina, et al. undermines the principles of fairness, equal opportunity, and social justice that are crucial for creating a vibrant higher education system and an inclusive society.
Race-conscious admissions policies have played a critical role in addressing historical inequalities and systemic discrimination. By overturning these policies, the Supreme Court ruling threatens to perpetuate existing disparities and impede progress toward a more equitable society. This decision—which disregards the widespread use of preferential admissions based on other factors besides race, including an applicant’s legacy status—upholds systemic barriers that prevent underrepresented communities from accessing higher education.
As educators, we know firsthand how race-conscious admissions policies contribute to the educational development of all students by promoting cross-cultural understanding and challenging stereotypes. These policies are essential for cultivating the kinds of academic communities that prepare students to live and work in a diverse and interconnected world.
We call on policymakers, educators, and advocates to continue to champion inclusive admissions practices, address implicit biases, and implement comprehensive diversity initiatives.
The MLA remains committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academy and beyond. We stand with those affected by this Supreme Court decision and reaffirm our dedication to fostering equal opportunities for all.
