Planned Giving to the MLA
Leaving Your Legacy
For more than 130 years, the MLA has promoted the study and teaching of languages and literatures through its programs, publications, annual convention, and advocacy work. Including the MLA in your plans for future giving shows your continued support of the study of language, literature, and the humanities at a critical time.
If you believe in the MLA’s mission, please consider supporting it with a planned gift.
Contributions to the MLA support the professional development of graduate students and non-tenure-track faculty members, provide assistance to colleagues in developing nations, sustain advocacy efforts at the local and national level, and much more.
Ways to Give
There are different gift options to suit your financial goals. Every donation—no matter the amount—makes a difference in the MLA’s ability to advocate on behalf of the humanities and the profession.
Bequest
Including a charitable bequest in your will is a simple way to make a lasting gift to the MLA and your community. You can leave a bequest to the MLA by adding to an existing will or drafting a new one. You can pledge a gift of a dollar amount, specific property, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after distributions to other beneficiaries.
To assist donors or their counsel in drafting testamentary language, the association offers the following samples:
“I hereby give and bequeath [dollar amount, name of asset, or percentage of estate] to the Modern Language Association of America (Tax ID: 13-5253530), a Maryland nonprofit corporation operating from 85 Broad Street, New York, NY 10004, for its general purposes.”
“I hereby give and bequeath all [or ___%] of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to the Modern Language Association of America (Tax ID: 13-5253530), a Maryland nonprofit corporation operating from 85 Broad Street, New York, NY 10004, for its general purposes.”
Life Insurance
Giving through life insurance is one of the simplest ways to make a significant contribution to the MLA and establish your legacy. You can designate the Modern Language Association as the primary or secondary beneficiary of either all or some percentage of the proceeds from the policy, or you can transfer ownership of the policy to the MLA, even if you are continuing to make payments.
Informing the MLA of Your Gift
We ask that you inform the MLA of your intention to make a gift by completing the Declaration of Intent form or by contacting Anna Chang at achang@mla.org or 646 576-5029. The MLA recommends that you consult with your tax adviser or financial planning professional to determine which planned giving vehicle works best for you.
Thank you for considering the Modern Language Association in your future giving plans! If you have any questions about planned giving, please feel free to contact Anna Chang at achang@mla.org or 646 576-5029.
