Higher Ed Careers beyond the Professoriat: A Constellation of Possibilities
27 March 2024
2:00–3:00 p.m. ET
Moderator: Janine Utell (MLA)
Speakers: Karen Cardozo (Leap Here Consulting), Alyssa Stalsberg Canelli (Brandeis Univ.), Jessica A. Hutchins (Southern Illinois Univ., Edwardsville), Kristine Lodge (Incipit Career)
Like a river with many tributaries, humanities PhDs flow organically into the wider world of work; thus, supporting diverse career outcomes is inextricable from broader commitments to fostering equity and belonging in academe and beyond. In this roundtable, a subset of contributors to the new essay collection Higher Education Careers beyond the Professoriate (Purdue UP, 2024) will illuminate different identities, motivations, experiences, and other push-pull factors that led them at varied career stages into new roles beyond the faculty. After a synopsis of common themes by one of the volume’s coeditors (Cardozo), the panel will discuss how to negotiate “contingencies and possibilities” (Canelli), the potential for inter/disciplinary skills transfer (Hutchins), and modeling how to go “from stuck to satisfied” by honoring one’s values and priorities (Lodge). Representing the larger volume, presenters will offer insights on how to navigate today’s disruptive economies and redefine success on your terms to find meaningful work in a fulfilling life.
